Fashion Failures: What Didn’t Make It in 2009

What’s hot and what’s not in the fashion world is never easy to predict. A celebrity turning up to an awards’ ceremony in an outfit can make the unlikeliest of fashion accessories or garments the next ‘in’ thing overnight - such as Gwyneth Paltrow and her sky high heels; whilst carefully constructed drives to popularise a new look might simply flop.

The catwalk is always a good indication of what are the up and coming trends, but many of the overstated items of clothing on show aren’t always the exact carnations of what is to come into your local High Street store, merely a hint towards some of the themes you are likely to see.

Trend predictions can often be well wide of the mark and at the tail end of 2008 and into 2009, there were a number of fashion forecasts that never quite materialised - in the mainstream, at least.

Accessories are things normally associated with women’s fashion – whether it’s handbags, purses, necklaces or countless other kinds of jewellery. Accessories are an emerging market for men too, however, and some predictions asserted that 2009 would be the year that men would finally embrace the brooch. Whilst they were certainly in stock in some design and retail circles, and worn by people like the Kaiser Chief's Ricky Wilson at the start of the year, men’s brooches never really made it into the mainstream to any real extent.

Styles inspired by dinner suits figured highly for female fashion in 2008, and a similar prediction was made for men’s fashion in 2009.

Essentially, the style would involve combining dinner or tuxedo jackets with more casual attire, to create a look that wouldn’t look too out of place on James Bond on a night off. Again, there have been hints of this style infiltrating some stores, but no clear indication of it grabbing the public’s attention in any major way.

Indeed, it’s never easy to know what’s going to be a fashion feat or a fashion failure. For example, in 2009, a military menswear trend was predicted and this did in fact happen, with a number of top High Street retailers selling everything from military-inspired jackets, to shirts, trousers and even hats.

However, men’s brooches, casual tuxedo attire and the Goth Ninja look never quite caught the public’s imagination: but 2010 is another year and who knows what quirky, kitsch or downright odd fashion features will take centre stage across the world’s High Street outlets?
